Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, lies on the north-western coast of Java on the Bay of Jakarta. It is the ninth largest urban area in the world, with more than 31 million inhabitants. The city's history goes back to the 4th century and its name changed several times, from Sunda Kelapa to Batavia. Jakarta has a hot and humid equatorial climate with temperatures of 24-34 °C.
